All I could think of/hear was Phil Ochs adaptation of The Highwayman - a poem I'd loved as a child and then loved as his song.... I think I remembered most of the verses.

Usually - although it's a bit like juggling - I can pet at least 3 cats/"kittens" at once. This am, however, I was holding Cloud when Angel came in looking jealous. Now, holding Cloud is a complicated maneuver: one arm supports her, but - distrustful little thing that she is - the other is her monkey bar - she clings with all 4 limbs and her quite prehensile tail, totally trapping me until she decides it's time to let go. Sorry, Angel, I say - I'll pet you at the first available opportunity. After staring in horrified disbelief for a few moments, Angel departs, disgusted. A little while later, Cloud, sated for the time being with the sweet talk and the kisses, releases me, and I go into the bedroom to get dressed. As I sit on the side of the bed, Angel comes racing in - up he jumps and flops immediately, so that half of him is hanging precariously off the edge. He just looks at me: un-petted, he has obviously lost the will to live. So pathetic.

I can't even find the comment that I want to answer! But even though it's been a while, I want you to know that your story about that poor little feral - you and your neighbor feeding him (her?), trying to save him when he was sick, and finally bringing him back home to be buried in between the people who cared for him - such kindness! And in such a world! And for someone so small most would overlook him completely. Human and Grandhuman went to the cemetery, and afterwards came to spend time with cats and "kittens"... Cloud put in the first appearance, seriously kissing Grandhuman's fingers. (Nibbling apparently did not occur, which was maybe a good thing.) Then came Cyrrie: Food? Food?? Then the AreToo, Nubia, Angel and - eventually - Lucy. The no-shows were 'Toonya and the Budster, for reasons of their own. (Points will be taken.)

Long day at work today, but that wasn't the bummer. Around noon I went out and put dry food and new water out for our mysterious ferals - 1? 2?? Who knows! Some time later I decided to take a peek - just needed to get away from the desk, etc. Going around to a different door that looked right out on where we leave the food, I was horrified - and tickled - to see a small red squirrel chowing down. Who knew? Infrared deer cams - or similar - are definitely called for. Jennifer mentioned Craig's List - can you rent there??

But this just happened, so: Angel (surprise, surprise) was just astonishingly rude to Petunnia. The outraged human chased him through 3 rooms, and when he finally dived behind the couch, she continued to scold him for... at least several seconds. A few minutes later, human is hanging with 'Toonya on the bed when Angel slinks into the bedroom, clearly feeling, well, not guilty, but at least uncertain of his welcome. Human sez, It's ok, come on up, all is forgiven... Petunnia sez, Huh? Human: Yes, Sweet-P, you forgived him. Petunnia: Did I? Human: Yes, of course you did! I forgived him, and I couldn't have done if you hadn't first...! Petunnia: Well, in that case. At this moment they are both snoozing, on separate pillows, but about 5" apart.... (It is a good thing he's cute, it is!)

Background info: Last week, on a day when the temp got above freezing, I tossed a few oldish/dryish clementines out into the back yard, thinking that just maybe something - excuse me, someone - might come along and eat them. But it didn't happen, and for a couple of days there were the bright orange clementines fluorescing against the grey... Then it snowed, and they were gone. Then the snow started to melt. This morning I went out with the bird seed and came back in to watch the birdies come - but they didn't! Looking around to try and figure out why, I noticed - at the very peak of my garage roof - a bright orange ball. Huh? And then it got better: one of our phat squirrels was running about the garage roof, looking for enemies or similar that finally just weren't there - finally he ascended to the point and began to feast with great enjoyment on frozen clementine. Go figure. (And did any cats or "kittens" enjoy this lol w/ me? Alas, no - the lazy, spoiled sillies....)

FancyFeast for all! And good news for the poor, technically challenged, human: After finally getting new rechargeable batteries for the camera, and then not using it for several weeks, the human was shocked to find it dead. She recharged the batteries, put them back in the camera, and... nothing. Oh, noes! I thought, I bought the wrong batteries! I killed the camera! However, when I decided to try re-recharging, I noticed that one battery wasn't exactly aligned in the charger. Could that be the reason? Setting it straight, I let them recharge, but didn't try them out in the camera until just now. Expecting the worst, instead my camera came back to life, and I took pictures and everything. This, along with cats and "kittens" of course, has cheered me up considerably. (Now all I need is help with (re) installing printer drivers and resetting a router...)

But watching the Angel - laired on the piano bench, twisting and glittering for no apparent reason - gave her back a jolt of energy mostly missing so far this calendar year. About a month ago, the phone charger on my nightstand ceased to function. I assumed it had been jostled by someone, but wasn't in the mood to move the bed out in order to plug it back in again. Today, when the bed was moved, I saw that it was still plugged in, but that the cord had been bitten not just in half, but seriously gnawed up and down it's length. I know Nubia's handiwork (toothiwork?) when I see it, and my blood ran cold. How did she manage not to nuke herself?

I decided that an appropriate NYE Day activity would be to clean my bedroom, which is the least cleaned area in our house, for various reasons (including that I'm allergic to dust, and think it's best to let sleeping dust bunnies lie) (I know, I know). It was particularly bad today - dust festuned the corners and the ceiling fan, and I'd been putting off vacuuming in there on account of a lost earring. First stage, strip the bed and move it out from the wall - causing no end of inconvenience to cats and kittens. Second stage, retrieve all the books, newspapers and magazines (and one pillow) that had slipped off the bed since... whenever. Third stage, from underneath, with a dustmop, retrieve all the official and unofficial cats toys - 19 of the first, 4 of the second (pen-top, envelope, throat lozenge and my great aunt's cameo ring, which I hadn't even missed. Stage four, pull the storage boxes (including Lizzie, Strega, Nemo and, now, Banshee the Beautiful). Stage five, vacuum. Stage six, re-make the bed. (Er, try to re-make the bed. How many helpers did I have? Lucy, Petunnia, Angel, AreToo and Cyrrie...)

Lucy is lumpy no more! At least not for a while... Having spent the week of Xmas break trying at least once or twice a day to work on Luz with comb, brush and scissors, I broke down yesterday and begged the vetz to take her in for a trim. ("We're not groomers." "You've done her before." Etc.) The upshot was our sweet Dr. Kelly saw her this am, and app 20 min later we were "home again, home again, lickety split," as we say... Our joint NYR is to keep her combed. (Yeah, yeah...)

The grandhuman is back online - I will perhaps publically curse both the manufacturer of her new computer and her new isp, but at least - at the moment - she can access the web and has email... And it only took 4 days, including 2 chat sessions w/ the isp and 2 telephone conversations w/ same.... I set the alarm in order to be able to go to church this morning, but after a bad night - couldn't get warm no matter what I wore or how many blankies I piled on the bed - and getting up to see how yesterday's rain was today's ice - I decided to stay in instead.
I am actually longing for a big mug of hot cocoa and whipped cream, but have had to settle for coffee (black). Does Swiss Miss deliver?
Christmas Eve blogging, cont.: We had the grandhuman over for dinner, and they were "good" in that everybody put in an appearance. Cloud and Cyrrie reverted to kittenhood and were all over the poor grandhuman - of course food was involved. I had pictured a nice quiet time sitting by the fire, sipping champagne and nibbling on snacks. Snacks such as salmon spread and chunks of smoked salmon. You see the problem... I probably should have thought that through a little more. On the other hand, it probably wouldn't have made much difference. Food! Real food! said Cyrrie to his sister, while the human said, No, get down, be good, and while the grandhuman kept feeding them licks of spread and bits of salmon and even broke up a cracker for them, which they ate. (Cloud was also mesmerized by the champagne bubbles in the old fashioned hollow stem glasses...)

Turning on the light, I saw Nubia tapping various surfaces of the antique commode that's opposite the foot of the bed. Huh? As she tapped, and I watched, the little door opened and out came... Angel! Strangest of all is that fact that inside the door are 2 shelves full of stuff - no room for an Angel as far as I can tell.

Well, being sick and still working has taken its toll, but here's a bit of last night which was lovely. Last night - really early this morning - the human woke up in advance of the alarm and dithered about what to do: Get up and do some useful things? Or wait for the alarm in the hope of storing up some rest/energy/etc. As I dithered, the moon (or the earth?) moved, and suddenly beautiful silver moonlight beamed in through the blinds of the window by the bed! The bed was frosted with bars of silver light, and the human, Petunnia and Buddy cuddled together to enjoy it. (Well, sort of: Human cuddled with each, if you know what I mean.) But the moonlight was magical, astonishing, lovely... Better than chocolate or even jewelry, actually. And as I type this, the moon is on the other side of the house, shining through the computer room window, not full anymore, but amazing in loveliness...

Human really did not intend to spend her 4 day Thanksgiving break being sick, but that was pretty much the way it happened:
On Thursday morning, the human used a brief spurt of energy to bake a (mostly) home-made pumpkin pie - Cloud helped by licking at the unbaked pie crust (thank goodness this was only for family)...
One morning AreToo first scared me and then made me laugh - so intent was he on bird watching that he toppled right off the dresser, and, obviously unhurt, so intent was he on bird watching that he didn't even go through the who-me-I meant-to-do-that-when-in-doubt-wash-routine - just jumped back up and looked back out the window.
Ms Nubia continues to mellow - she's gained a fair amount of weight - not that I'd call her plump yet - and her fun is absolutely gorgeous. She and Angel play together the most, which is probably a relief to everyone else...
Hope everyone had a good holiday! More to come...

Human Zero... No, it's not quite that bad. And this is only day 3 of 21 days of antibiotics, so things are bound to get better. And a 4 day holiday won't hurt. The pictures just posted have been stacking up in the camera for weeks, with the batteries dying every time I wanted to post, so it was nice just now to put up a few... As I type almost everyone's asleep - 4 in the bedroom, Nubia in the computer room, Cloud in the living room and Lucy on the dining room table - AreToo's nowhere to be found, but since he was fine a while ago I won't panic. Much. Yet...
